Hi! I am a PhD Candidate with the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews in Scotland from Cornwall, UK. My doctoral research is interdisciplinary in nature, combining peace and conflict studies, sociology (resistance studies), anthropology, and Romani studies, in order to explore the exclusion, marginalisation, and everyday resistance practices of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) communities in conflict-affected areas (for more details see the 'current projects' page).
At the University of St Andrews I am a PhD Fellow with the Centre for Minorities Research, the Institute of Middle East, Central Asia, and Caucasus Studies (MECACS), and the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies.
Aside from my doctoral research, I also work as an independent researcher, focusing on marginalised groups in conflict-affected areas, peacebuilding, identity, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugee protection. My key areas of interest are the intersection of conflict, displacement, marginalisation, identity and resistance.
I hold an MA in conflict studies and human rights from Utrecht University and an MA in refugee protection and forced migration studies from the Refugee Law Initiative; part of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. I have worked and volunteered in Taiwan, Sudan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Iraqi Kurdistan, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Kosovo. I bring to my work experience in working with, interviewing, and conducting research alongside marginalised and vulnerable communities such as rural women in Afghanistan, IDP and refugee girls and women in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian community in the Balkans, and Kurdish Gypsies in Iraqi Kurdistan. Through my research I am committed to contributing to the objectives of research participants, and giving back wherever possible.
I am passionate about social justice and grassroots community empowerment and action. As such, I welcome collaboration and am often willing to perform pro-bono work for a good cause. Please see the 'contact' page for details of how to get hold of me - Onen Hag Oll.
